Myanmar's Spirit Festival
The Spirit Festival in Myanmar is a yearly spiritual event
that has now become a famous gay pride event in the country. People gather from
all around the country to meet Nat Kadaws, or “spirit wives” translated in
English. These individuals are beluieved to communicate with spirits to answer
any questions or hopes. The Nat Kadaws perform and meet people throughout the
weeklong festival and are highly respected in this society. These “spirit
wives” are males dressed in eccentric costumes and makeup. Although these
homosexual individuals are seen as positive, the country of Myanmar has laws
against “homosexual activities”. The supernatural quality of these mediums
allows for their sexuality to be accepted and this week long celebration of
these people begins the acceptance of the LGBTQ community.
