Church Mission or Death Mission?
A man from Alabama, named John Allen Chau, has been killed by
isolated tribespeople on the North Sentinel island between India and Myanmar. Chau was motivated to come
in contact with these people in order to preach Christianity. He was illegally
brought to the island by fishermen, where he kayaked to shore. There he was
shot down by arrows. The fishermen watched from a distance as the body was pulled
by rope, then decided to flee the scene. His body has still not been recovered.
Many are wondering if his remains should be recovered. Contact
with the Sentinelese tribe is illegal due to their risk of disease from
outsiders. It is even possible that they have already contracted a disease from
Chau, such as the flu or measles, that they have no immunity to. The Sentinelese
could be exterminated, because the hunter-gatherer tribe consist of only about
50 to 150 people in all. They live on their own small island, completely
removed from the rest of the world. They do not welcome outside contact, and
even shoot arrows at helicopters and boats that come too close to their shores.
This tribe clearly wants to be left alone.
