Too Late for Justice?
The South Korean defense minister released an official apology for the rapes and other tragedies towards women during the 1980 Gwangju protest’s military response. A recent investigation by the government confirmed 17 cases of sexual salt. The troops were guilty of rape, sexual assault and sexual torture. The victims included teenagers and a pregnant woman. The defense minister bowed and described how soldiers inflicted “unspeakable pain” on these women. The prime minister also released an apology. But, is that enough? Some of the victims, though, said that this apology would not reconcile their loss and pain. They wanted to see these guilty troops punished.
Do these victims deserve to see their attacker go to prison even if they are government and military persona?
